How can I edit certificates in Keychain Access on MacBook Air?

I want to set a self-signed certificate as "trusted" in Keychain Access (so I can browse a server on my LAN without constant warnings). I open Keychain Access, double-click on any certificate, it opens and then immediately closes itself. This means I cannot edit anything about the certificate. Certificates in question are in the login->Certificates section. I'm using a freshly restarted M1 Macbook Air M1 (2020) with OS 15.4.1.

Thanks but no, I was not asking how to create a self-signed certificate on my Mac. I was asking how to permanently allow a self-signed certificate from a web server I visit. When opening a certificate in the Keychain Access app, the certificate would open and them immediately close. I was able to solve it by doing "Reset Default Keychains" in Keychain Access settings and then adding the certificate authority (CA) certificate from my server to Keychain Access.

Good computing omegahelix !

It is an interesting resolve:

Does this effect (ie lose) all stored passwords in the new Passwords.app (?) That would be quite the tradeoff...

Thanks for your help. Yes, it does clear the "Default Keychains -> login" items but despite what it says it didn't seem to clear the iCloud ones. I had to re-login to my iCloud account for my Mac.

I use a different password manager but those who use the Keychain may want to tread carefully.

Thanks omegahelix— very helpful.
