Apple Devices app for Windows: File transfer freezes File Explorer; app sometimes fails to launch
The app is a solid alternative for those without Macs, but it's still riddled with bugs. For example, if you share files via File Explorer, that window becomes unusable until the transfer finishes. A thumbnail of the files being copied lingers on screen as the only marker of progress, until it just disappears — an issue that should have been fixed long ago given the app has been through several update cycles since launch. At random times, the app won’t even launch when you click on the icon, requiring a reset in the settings to get it working again.
I've attached a screenshot of one of the issues I'm describing while transferring a random folder to my iPad:
Here's a list of my suggestions:
- Allow File Explorer to remain responsive during file transfers. Users should be able to continue using File Explorer while transfers are in progress. Blocking interaction is disruptive and inefficient.
- Add a proper progress indicator for file transfers instead of relying on a static image. A proper progress bar or notification would greatly improve usability.
- Fix the issue where a thumbnail of the files being copied remains on screen until the transfer finishes. I think this is a bug or a deliberate attempt to make the experience as trashy as possible for Windows users. It's working because this is visually distracting and unnecessary.
- Improve the stability of the app so it launches reliably.
- Provide clear error messages when the app fails to launch.
- Eliminate the need to reset the app in settings to resolve launch issues. Resetting the app to fix launch issues is a poor user experience and should not be a standard troubleshooting step.
