iMac stuck on apple logo and progress bar after Mojave reinstall

Hello,

I have a 27 inch (late 2015) iMac. I had recently been having a problem when I restarted it, it would almost get through the progress bar and stop. I even let it sit overnight and still no progress. After unplugging the computer completely for a little while I decided to use the recovery mode to reinstall the macOS. It finished the initial process of reinstalling Mojave and automatically rebooted to the apple startup screen and loading bar. The loading bar isn’t moving. It’s been a few hours. My concern now is if I force a restart It might mess things up worse. Is there ANY hope of getting my IMac to work again or am I completely out of luck?

thank you,

Megan

From what you describe, that iMac is exhibiting the same symptoms it did prior to reinstalling macOS. Reinstalling was the right thing to do. I doubt it made anything worse, and I do not believe forcing it to shut down and restarting again will either.

It probably won't help though. Do you have a Time Machine backup you can restore or otherwise use to repopulate the iMac's content, should you wish to erase it and start over? That may be required.

Before you do that try starting that Mac in "Safe Mode": Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

I suspect the HD has packed it in. If you can get it to boot in Safe Mode then download DriveDX and test the HD. If you have a Fusion Drive test the HD not the SSD portion. If any errors appear then that simply confirms my hunch. At that point it would be wise to simply replace the device as a 2015 really has no value and is obsolete in that it cannot run current versions of Mac OS. Also, Apple considers a 2015 iMac as Vintage meaning parts are largely unavailable.
