External trackpad not scrolling when connected to MacBook Air

I've just bought an external trackpad to go with my MacBook Air and studio monitor but am disappointed: it doesn't scroll and I have to "hard tap" to get it to do things (unlike the trackpad on my MacBook Air). I am a big fan of Apple but get very frustrated when their products do not behave in the intuitive way in which one would expect them too.

Difficult to find answers online. All help appreciated - otherwise, I'm asking for a refund...!

"Thanks for your reply but surely the whole point about buying an *Apple* track pad is that it's compatible with my *Apple* laptop. It connects OK but it's just not scrolling. It's very strange..."
