Replaced airpods 2 with airpods 4. The 4 doesn't announce text messages while I'm walking like the 2's did. I searched for this and have reset both the phone and airpods and also removed the airpods and reconnected. But I still don't get messages while using them and listening to music. It used to say "message from XXX & read and then ask if I wanted to reply".

I have the AirPods 4, but am using them on a device with iOS 16 and they do not announce text messages. I was under the impression that the feature is only available on iOS 18, but honestly I have seen mixed reports even with iOS 18. The Support Article above clearly states the AirPods 4 are compatible with that feature.
Sorry, I cannot be more helpful and maybe there will be another user who can confirm/deny the feature on iOS 18.
