How are you connecting the drive to the phone exactly?

Are you using an adapter? If so, which one?

Where are you looking for it on the iPhone? External drives should appear in the Files App

How is the drive formatted? If it's formatted NTFS for Windows it won't show up on an iPhone. You would need to format it as exFat or HFS+ or APFS.

You’ll likely need to provide external power to that SSD, as the iPhone won’t. Can’t.

It's not listed as being able to. It is listed as working with iPhone 15 & 16. Make sure when buying external storage, you purchase one that is compatible with your model.
