External drive is readable on my Mac but password-protected on others

My daughter's Mac is backed up on a Toshiba external drive. When her Mac died she borrowed a friend's to access her backup files and folders but all are password protected even though she could open them freely on her own Mac.

Getting this Data:

Have your friend create a new guest user on their Mac, and then use Migration Assistant to export data from the Time Machine Backup. See if you no longer get this.

Confirm the Encryption:

Open Disk Utility, and then elect the drive. See if you see the word "(Encrypted)", located at the far-right of the dulled-out line below the hard drive name.

Getting Into Disk Utility:

  1. Click: the Desktop
  2. Click: Go menu (in the taskbar)
  3. Select: Utilities
  4. Open: Disk Utility
  5. Click: the drive
