How to diagnose Wi-Fi calling problems on iPhone 13 Pro?

In my home, I lose calls while sitting next to my phone. In my phone Settings/Cellular Network selection flip-flops between Wi-Fi Calling and Freedom Mobile. Wi-Fi signal strength is strong.


Connection to the internet is via Fibre fed ISP's modem. The modem is connected to TP-Link AX23 router (and RE705X range mesh extender). All home devices are connected to the TP-Link, most wirelessly. Wi-Fi calling gives the same issue whether connected wirelessly to the modem, or to the TP-Link.


IPhone software is always updated.


Any pointers will be appreciated.

Some key points:

  • In most cases, Wi-Fi calling does route voice over the internet via VoIP (Voice over IP).
  • But behind the scenes, the carrier could still be blending technologies or routing part of the call through their own systems in hybrid ways (e.g., using IP Multimedia Subsystems).
  • And for the user, there's no transparent way to confirm if every millisecond of that voice call stayed purely online.


So yes—your gut instinct is valid. There's no absolute way for an end user to know unless the carrier gives a full technical breakdown (which they almost never do).

One thing not yet mentioned. Go to Settings/Cellular and scroll to near the bottom. Is Wi-Fi assist turned on? If it is the phone will switch to cellular if the Wi-Fi connection is weak (not just the connection to your router; also between the router and your ISP Point of Presence ([POP]). Try turning Wi-Fi assist off.

That’s what my request was designed to determine. Turning on Airplane Mode will turn off the cellular radio transceiver. Now enable WiFi and connect to your local network. Try a call. Does it work?


WiFi calling is a service of your cellular provider. If your provider requires a cell signal, you may not be able to send and receive WiFi calls in fringe reception areas. Some cellular service providers require a higher tier of service to provide total WiFi calling with no cellular service.

Hi Jeff,


I can confirm both outgoing and incoming call work in airplane mode with the WiFi enabled. My young test helper reported hearing my voice as choppy although I heard him clearly - I figure his cellular signal might be suspect. He also taught me that Facetime audio offers a more stable performance.

PROBLEM: For most of the past three years I have been experiencing poor and unreliable cellular reception on my iPhone 13 Pro in my home. I called Freedom Mobile on several occasions over the past 3 years for help with Wi-fi Calling.  Although enabled on my iPhone, wifi-Calling and flip flops with cellular. I cannot get only wi-fi Calling when I’m at home. I’ve since installed a TP-Link AX23 router then a RE705X mesh extender, all with no improvement. Incoming calls fail to rimg even while I am holding my iPhone.


This past week, my last call to Freeedom Mobile Tech resulted in the switching out of the SIM card for the newest version. No improvement! I have since finally solved.


SOLUTION: Knowledge :-)


I’ve solved my issue with TWO QUESTIONS to Perplexity. Both TP-Link or Freedom Mobile would have avoided these years of frustration by all parties if the following two factors was clearly communicated by the techs/support to to the caller: 


1:  Wi-fi calling uses only the internet, NOT cellular signal. 


2:  iOS automatically chooses cellular over wi-fi calling.

A manual workaround is included in attached screenshot.

I turned off WiFi Assist and Settings/Cellular shows cellular although cellular is weak and WiFi signal is strong throughout the home. But wait! I did a hard reboot on iPhone and Settings/Cellular shows I am now on WiFi Calling ....... spoke too soon, it is back on Cellular. So, until Apple allows the choice to prioritize WiFi Calling over Cellular, while at home, I'll go with the Airplane mode :o)
