Can I summon Siri with 'Always On' display on Apple Watch SE?

I currently have an SE and I have to do something to make the screen come on before I can reach Siri.

With the newer versions that have the always on display, can Siri be summoned at any time with only my voice (like I can with my iPhone)?

Thanks

On the Apple Watch SE, you need to interact with the screen to activate Siri. With newer models that have “Always On” display, you can summon Siri with just your voice, even when the screen is dim.

According to this post How can I get my Apple Watch to enable di… - Apple Community :

  • To use Hey Siri on Apple Watch: wake the screen of your watch (by tapping it or by raising your wrist) and then say "Hey Siri".
  • The screen must be awake for the feature to work.

Note the second line.

This sure would have been a lot easier if someone with an AOD watch just took the two seconds to see if Siri works when the watch is static with nothing but a voice command :(

The display is at the core of my question.

On my SE, if the display is off, I must take action to make the display come on before Siri will work.

Then there is something amiss with your watch. None of the three methods of activating Siri (raise to wake, "Hey, Siri" or pressing and holding the Digital Crown) require that the display be active.

Have you taken any troubleshooting steps? Restarted the watch? Force restarted? Un-paired and re-paired?

FWIW I Think it is a SE cheapo thing. My SE needs screen on to be able to say Hey Siri.

Raise to wake or press crown all work of course.

If series watches dont need screen on then maybe the answer to OPs question is Yes?

It's been that way since day 1. Has had every update in the year I have had it and the behavior stays the same.

That indicates nothing is amiss - the screen must be awake. Still doesn't answer my simple question as to whether or not Siri will work with a watch with always on display by voice alone.

Exactly. After my neighbor spent 3 hours on his garage floor with a broken hip, I decided it was time to get something like a "Help I've fallen and can't get up" device. After a little research I decided that the Apple watch was a better option for me. I don't wear it on my wrist, I have it in a pendant case and only put it on when I am going to be out and about on the properyy doing dangerous things (think chain saw etc). I was disappointed when I realized that I had to be able to "wake" the phone up to use Siri. Thus this thread...if the models with AOD allowed this, I was going to get a Series 10. I still haven't received a definitive answer, but it appears that when the screen dims on an AOD device it's the same as when our SE's screen blanks and Siri will not respond.
