How do I fix continuous volume icon pop-ups on my 2025 MacBook Air?

My brand new 13 inch MacBook Air (M4) had been running perfectly until today, when the sound volume icon, the one that appears in the center of the screen when you adjust the volume, started appearing. It started popping up about every 10 seconds, then fade out after about a second. Now, it's continuous, as soon as it fades out, it pops up again. Also, sometimes when it appears, it adjusts the volume up or down a tick or two. Other times, there's no change. This is making the computer unusable.

None of the volume keys appear to be stuck. I am at loss as to how to fix this, I’ve already shutdown and unplugged

everything AND just completed the recent Apple software update without any success!

Any ideas how to fix this?

Wondering if there's something you do, unknowingly, that is triggering the volume icon ..

Eg: For me: Recently found the volume was unexpecedly popping up a "muted" icon ...

found I was accidentally touching the mute control on my mac's touch bar with a stray finger

when I reached. for Siri's icon right next to it, or from the touch ID icon. beside Siri's.

Happened quite a bit until I tracked that down. {My excuse is using left hand while right hand heals.)

✽ Else: Maybe there's a keyboard shortcut

  • Option–Volume Up: Open Sound settings. This works with any of the volume keys.
  • Option–Shift–Volume Up or Option–Shift–Volume Down: Adjust the sound volume in smaller steps.

✽ Apple support's article Turn your Mac volume up or down - Apple Support may give a clue.

or

✽ Perhaps it is triggered only in a specific app ?

The appearance of a Speaker like icon in the Middle of the Screen ?

Looks like you are pressing F10 ( Mute ) , F11 (Volume Down ) or F12 (Volume Up ) Keys on the keyboard

That would account for this.

At least, that is what happens on my M3 Macbook Air

The last button on top right is both the Power Button and the Fingerprint Sensor

Use Touch ID on Mac
