How do I set default Step settings in the Step Sequencer?

Currently in Logic 11.1.2, if I create a blank Pattern Region each Step setting defaults to Velocity, Repeat, Note and Octave - regardless of which Kit is used or if it's just empty. How do I change these settings permanently? For example, I would rarely if ever use Octave and would always prefer to have Offset available. Instead of always needing to swap Octave for Offset in every single Row for every single Kit I'd just like it if Offset replaced Octave or, at the very least, had Offset already populated with the four others.

The Official user guide refers to a “Save as Row Default” option but never once actually says where this is. Does it even exist?

Something else to consider regarding this part of your post:

"Given that the Step Sequencer was robbed of a Humanize function (you cannot use MIDI Transform -> Humanize with a Pattern Region, the Step Sequencer's Randomize function spits out obscene ranges which cannot be scaled and the Pattern Local Inspector only offers Swing)".

A good idea might be to:

  • Convert to Midi from the Pattern Region
  • Perform Midi Transform Functions
  • Convert back to pattern

Hope that Helps Sir!

I appreciate the reply!

I have experimented with the "Store as Default Pattern Template" Function after 1) manually replacing and/or adding Offset to the available step settings for each individual row of a random kit, 2) creating a new blank kit and assigning Offset to the first row, as well as 3) duplicating a track which was used to store the Default, switching the kit and creating a new Pattern Region but the stored settings apparently don't include Step settings (?) or are abandoned entirely from kit to kit (??). In other words, the way the Step Sequencer's so-called "Default" is implemented is effectively useless since it is only tied to how a specific kit behaves rather than how a Default Pattern behaves.

Logic Developers: Allow users to set the default Step settings globally and/or (at the very least) have the Store as Default Pattern Template function actually do what it says (which isn't "Store as [This Specific Kit]'s Only, For Some Reason, Default Pattern Template"). Given that the Step Sequencer was robbed of a Humanize function (you cannot use MIDI Transform -> Humanize with a Pattern Region, the Step Sequencer's Randomize function spits out obscene ranges which cannot be scaled and the Pattern Local Inspector only offers Swing) I'm struggling to imagine why Octave was prioritized over Offset within the context of drum programming, especially when Note is already provided (but only goes down to C2...?).
