How to effectively transfer work files from MacBook Pro to iPad Pro for home use?

I have a MacBook Pro which I use at work. (I work in a different country from where I live, on a rotational basis). I recently bought an iPadPro to use at home. The expectation that was created was that I could just transfer all relevant work to the iPad from the laptop and continue working at home.

This is not so at all. 1. Any PDF apps for the iPad are very expensive and they don't work well. 2. iPad file handling is completely different to the laptop and very counter intuitive. 3. Apps like Pixelmator, Filmora, etc are not supported on the iPad.

Overall a very disappointing experience. Are there any other users with similar experiences?

Assuming that both your Mac and iPad are signed-in to iCloud with the same AppleID, any files that you store in your iCloud storage will be accessible to both devices no matter where you are. All you need is an internet connection to access your iCloud storage.

As for the Apps that you specifically mention, they are certainly supported and available from the Apple App Store:

Pixelmator

Filmora: Al Video Editor, Maker

As for having access to an internet connection, this is only required to access and download a copy of the file stored in iCloud. To be clear, once downloaded to a device, you don't require a continuous internet connection.

Speaking of personal experience, I have not encountered any file corruption when transferring files via external USB storage. Perhaps you can provide more information about how iPadOS "scrambles" file handing.

As for suitably as a laptop replacement - acknowledging that a minority of tasks that can be performed on a Mac or PC are difficult or impossible to achieve with iPad. However, balancing this observation, the same is true in reverse; an iPad is equally capable of some tasks not possible with a traditional laptop). I have, by choice, largely transitioned to my iPad Pro as my main computer. YMMV.

Perhaps if you outline how, where and when you are experiencing difficulties, I or other contributors may be able to offer specific guidance.

Thank you for re-titling my heading.

  1. Your assumption that one is always in a place where you have internet is wrong. For this reason iCloud (or any other cloud based solution) is not suitable.
  2. The apps you have tagged are installed on my iPad (at great cost) but with far less functionality than the same apps on the laptop. (Plus a PDF app, that works some of the time, one of many I tried using).

My hopes are that any prospective iPad buyers do not fall into the same trap. Apple needs to be much more transparent about the [lack of] abilities of the iPad.

More fudging of the lines by Apple.

I understand your position and appreciate that you took the time and effort to help. And your replies are all sensible.

I do not have a problem transferring files, I do that via external drives etc. (So the title change is misleading by Apple).

What I do have a problem with is how iPad OS scrambles the handling of those files (as other users have pointed out in different posts).

What needs pointing out (again not to you since you are a user like the rest of us) is that an iPad is far from a replacement for a laptop. It is great for certain things, but not a suitable replacement.
