Mac Mini M4 – Wireless keyboard + mouse lagging due to USB-C Hub Interference
I’ve recently purchased a Mac Mini M4 and have set up two HDMI displays—one connected directly to the Mac Mini and the other via a USB-C hub. This hub includes:
- Gigabit Ethernet
- 2 USB 3.0 ports
- 2 USB 2.0 ports
- USB C PD
- USB C Data
- Memory card reader (TF / SD)
- HDMI output (4k/60Hz)
I’m using a Logitech K230 wireless keyboard with a Unifying Receiver and a Bluetooth mouse that also supports a 2.4GHz USB receiver.
Issue:
The keyboard and mouse frequently experiences lag or becomes unresponsive. My USB3.0 Data ports are unused on Hub and I have plugged both Logitech Unifying Receiver and 2.4Ghz wireless USB receiver to my hub. Sometimes, unplugging and replugging the receiver or switching USB ports temporarily resolves the issue.
Troubleshooting Steps Taken:
- Tested both USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports on the hub.
- Tried to use different USB C Hub (different specifications but same issue)
- There's no way to plug those recievers directly to Mac Mini M4 given that it has only USB C ports available
- Ensured the hub is positioned away from the Mac Mini.
- Verified that both monitors are set to 60Hz refresh rates.
Despite these efforts, the issue persists.
Question:
Could the USB-C hub be causing electromagnetic interference affecting the 2.4GHz wireless signals? If so, what solutions would you recommend to mitigate this interference without adding more hardware? I usually don't use wifi and use ethernet connection and noticed issue remaining same. If we're going to check my BT, I have previouslly connected handsfree and keyboard but they're not currently connected.
Any insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If there's specific guide on what kind of USB C extensions to be used, It'd be great help. I wanted to go for bluetooth keyboard mouse but I am not sure if I am going to face similar issue related to interference.
