"This video mode cannot be displayed." error after connecting Dell 1905FP to Mac mini M4

I have Mac M4 mini 2024 and I would like to connect a 2nd monitor (Dell 1905FP). I have a type-C to DVI and an HDMI to DVI cable but both do not work. The 2nd screen appears on system settings as extended display but my monitor just says "Dieser Videomodus kann nicht angezeigt warden."

Please help

Going by the message, the resolution for the display is too high for it to show it.

Click on the display in the Settings, and then select a different resolution from the list.

If you don't see a list of resolutions, click on Advanced at the bottom, and then make sure "Show Resolutions as a List" is turned on, go back and select a different resolution from the list.

That display seems to be limited to 1280x1024.

This 20-year-old AnandTech review confirms that the Dell 1905FP has a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels. Not just in the text of the review, but also in a screen shot where the monitor itself says that "Optimum" is "1280x1024 60 Hz."
