Apple Music Crashing on AppleTV

Almost every time I launch the Apple Music app on my AppleTV, it crashes. As a user, this is infuriating because I need to sit back down, wait for the crash to finish crashing, re-launch the app, re-find what I was doing and play it again. I believe there are several factors contributing to the crash.

  1. It seems like if you move very slowly and allow all the animated album covers load, you can reduce the chance of a crash. Similarly, on a fresh launch of the app post-crash the chance of a new crash is reduced. I personally think there's some kind of memory leak or cacheing of animated album art that is blowing up the AppleTV.
  2. It seems like if you shut off the inter-connectivity features of your phones, you can reduce the chance of a crash. Eg. we have several Apple devices (phones, ipads, etc) in the living room area. They are all constantly battling for control over the music. I find that sometimes my phone wants to control it, sometimes not- but when it DOES decide to "handoff" it causes crashes.

I can easily reproduce this crash in several ways:

  1. Open apple music > open a playlist > click play > hold the back button on the remote > press back again to go into screensaver mode
  2. Open apple music > go to songs > click randomize
  3. Have my wife controlling apple music from her phone > attempt to take over control. This one is more random... I find that most of the time my phone doesn't want to automatically interact with the AppleTV. When it does, however, it always leads to a crash as systems bounce back and forth trying to interact.

The whole Apple Music experience on AppleTV feels like an unoptimized buggy mess. The sluggishness of routine interactions with the interface lead me to believe it is not a user error.
