How to export and import an AI IntelliScript timeline from DaVinci Resolve 20 to Final Cut Pro?

I have recorded a video of myself speaking for approximately one hour while reading from a teleprompter. During the recording process, I occasionally made mistakes and repeated certain lines, resulting in multiple takes. Once these takes are edited and compiled, the final video is expected to be approximately 20 minutes in length.

However, the process of manually cutting and assembling these takes is time-consuming, especially if you do this on a daily basis. Final Cut Pro doesn't currently support Text-Based Video Editing, even though it is a highly requested feature, which means you're stuck with cutting footage by hand. But DaVinci Resolve 20 introduces a new feature called AI IntelliScript. This feature allows users to import a video of a speaker along with a text file containing the script, enabling DaVinci Resolve to automatically generate a rough cut within seconds.

I am interested in learning if the resulting project can be exported from DaVinci Resolve and subsequently imported into Final Cut Pro for fine-tuning and further editing? In other words: How do I export out and import a AI IntelliScript timeline from DaVinci Resolve 20 to Final Cut Pro? A simple step-by-step guide would be very helpful.

It seems like the AI Tools, including the IntelliScript, is not available for the free version of DaVinci Resolve 20. When I right-click my video footage the whole category is greyed out, so in that case I guess that it doesn't matter if DR can export a FCP XML or not since I can't use the IntelliScript feature in DR anyways. 🙃 Unfortunate that there's no way to do Text Based Editing, except for paying for DaVinci Resolve 20 Studio or Builder NLE for hundreds of dollars.

How can you possibly claim that DaVinci Resolve Studio is "considerably cheaper" than Final Cut Pro? It's less than a $5 USD difference. Also, Final Cut Pro gives you free updates for life, but if you want the latest features DaVinci costs $295 a year!

Cost to get the latest features over a 10 year period:

Final Cut Pro = $300

DaVinci Resolve Studio = $2950

So no, claiming that DaVinci Resolve Studio is "considerably cheaper" is objectively wrong.

I think that you’re probably going to need to export the video and import.

Exporting XML, besides needing a third party translation tool like SendToX, is unlikely to work if the timeline relies on features that do not translate to FCP.

This is just my supposition, not being a Resolve user. Perhaps someone with direct experience of Resolve and in particular this functionality may have a different perspective.

I'm downloading the beta version of DR20 now, I'll see if I can figure it out. My thought was that AI IntelliScript would generate a regular timeline and that DR has a option to export out XML files, but you're suggesting that a third party solution is needed achieve interoperability between DR and other NLEs? Premiere, for example, can export XML that can be imported into FCP.

I contacted Intelligent Assistance and they told me this:

"There is no plug-in that can edit video with text *inside* Final Cut Pro, but Builder NLE has been offering text based editing for FCP in an optimised interface since 2018, long before Blackmagic, or Adobe, got on the bandwagon.

You can explore with a 30 day free membership and then decide whether the membership model, accessing all the tools that Lumberjack System offer, is better for you, or a buyout of the app from the App Store is better.".

So I guess Intelligent Assistance doesn't offer any solutions, or are they the same company as Lumberjack System?

Update: it turns out that AI IntelliScript requires the paid version of DaVinci Resolve 20 Studio, and since I don't have $300 just to get Text Based Editing or this AI IntelliScript feature, this whole plan falls apart immediately. 🙃 I should have looked this up first. 😅

No sorry I haven't tried the Larry Jordan tutorial since it turns out that AI IntelliScript requires the paid version of DaVinci Resolve 20 Studio, and I don't have $300 to buy it now. Maybe in the future.

Regarding the Lumberjack Systems Builder NLE: if it was like $4 USD per month I think I would jump on it immediately, but right now when it's $250 USD upfront which is essentially the same price as DaVinci Resolve Studio 20 which also has Text Based Editing I think DR20 is a WAY better value honestly.

That's incorrect. Resolve Studio to date has always been a one off payment with free updates - it is not a subscription. Rumour has it that there may be upgrade charges in future versions but to date it is the same as FCP in terms of free updates.

Whether the difference in price is substantial or not is another thing. The UK price is currently £255 which partly takes into account the £-$ exchange rate which FCP doesn't apparently (not uncommon for a lot of software and hardware). So the difference would be about £40 - not enough to matter to a serious user. There is no little or no difference in the US prices it seems.

Incidentally Resolve 20 is a beta version. The full version could be some time away.

You’re right Clint, I don’t know why I thought DR had an annual fee for upgrades. I sincerely appreciate your correction and I do apologize for the misinformation on my part.

I do, however, maintain that stating that DR is ”significantly more expensive than FCP” is still not true. For US costumers, which I would argue is a larger portion of Apple users than UK customers, this fact is simply incorrect. Also, for some costumers, like me here in Sweden, DRS is actually ≈25% more expensive than FCP. So yes it varies by region, currency exchange rates, taxes etc., but stating something as a general fact just because it’s true for one’s own country is something I disagree with.

No worries and I agree. Ian's assertion was much too general.
