Final Cut Pro 11.1 frequently crashing

I am having frequent crashes of Final Cut Pro v11.1 while doing the most mundane tasks.

For example, it crashes while scrolling down through clips in an Event

or

Dragging a clip from an Event to a an open Project in the timeline window.

These are just a couple of seemingly basic operations that appear to trigger a crash, but not always.

I can’t yet see a pattern or connection between the crashes.

I am not experiencing crashes or freezes of the System or any other apps, including (so far) Adobe Premiere Pro 2024.

I have tried to narrow down the cause by turning off and on, all or some of the Login Items & Extensions in System Settings, with no success. Also tried uninstalling the universally derided CleanMyMac app, which also made no difference.

If it is helpful, I can provide multiple crash logs and an EtreCheckPro report.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

FCP really taxes the system. The theory is that CMM is overzealous about what it considers "not needed" and deletes critical system files. It's also possible that CMM has damaged your OS and a complete reinstall might be necessary. There are a few threads here about the reset and reinstall process. Basically you reinstall the OS, then reinstall *just* your User data from a backup- *no* Apps or System files. All Apps should be installed fresh from the AppStore or 3rd party developers as you need them.

It depends on what it “cleans”. There is absolutely no need to have any cleaning apps, and they are notorious for deleting files that should be left alone. Heavier more demanding apps are likely to be more affected, and not just FCP. The google keystone, which theoretically exist to keep google chrome and possibly other google apps up to date other notoriously badly behaved and can cause any application using the system videotoolbox to crash or fail in unexpected ways. Poor programming or malfeasance or both in each case. I never allow any of these on my macs, and in particular macs that have been touched by cleanmymac may need a full reinstall depending on the damage inflicted. Fortunately the possibilities for it to do harm are greatly diminished nowadays since they can’t touch system files, but still it is useless at best (and sold based on false premises), and harmful at worst.

Luis, thanks for your quick reply.

I have already tried the delete preferences as was suggested in another user’s post about their own FCP crashing issues.

It made no difference. Crashes continue.

BTW. The crashes are not generally occurring with great frequency, though sometimes do happen in clusters.

Usually 2 or 5 times in a typical editing day.

I don't have a crash very often, but I developed a workflow routine that has helped a lot to eliminate them. I do this without deleting any FCP preferences files.

  1. When I finish work for an edit session, I have FCP delete ALL the library render files.
  2. Close the library.
  3. Close Final Cut.
  4. Done.

The only down side to this procedure is that when you restart FCP, you have to choose the library you wish to work in again. It will not automatically open with an active library.

If FCP crashes or hangs while I am working, I do this:

  1. If FCP has hung, I Force Quit the app. (Right-click on the app icon in the Dock, choose Force Quit.)
  2. I send the crash report to Apple.
  3. I have an EMPTY FCP Library saved to my desktop for easy access. No events, media, or projects.
  4. Open the empty library. FCP will start normally with this empty library open.
  5. CLOSE the empty Library.
  6. CLOSE Final Cut.
  7. Re-open Final Cut.
  8. Choose the library you were working in when FCP crashed.
  9. Go back to work!

This works for me, and I don't have to take the time to delete my preferences file and restore a known good preferences file.

Do please post the Etrecheck report.

Whenever the application crashes, delete its preferences. To delete preferences, hold down command and option while starting the application and click Delete Custom Settings. The application will start with default settings and open an "Untitled" library. Adjust the settings, reopen the library you were working, and see how it works now.

I will also add that...

I thought the crashes might have something to do with working on a pre-existing FCP Library from a previous FCP version (v11 or v10) or created while using a previous Mac OS (Sonoma) or on my previous MacPro 2019>

I have created new FCP libraries, but crashes are still occurring, although my sense is that they are happening with less frequency. Can’t swear that is the case as work in the new Library is limited so far.

If uninstalling the CleanMyMac junk doesn't clear up the issue, you also have Google's auto-updating software installed. To completely remove all Google's cruft, follow the instructions at https://chromeisbad.com Simply removing Chrome.app is not enough. You may also need to reinstall FCP from the AppStore.
