Apple TV+ does not play content after age request on Mac

After updating to the latest version of macOS, the Apple TV app refuses to play age restricted content. I'm watching the Slow Horses show, and this is what happened when I tried to play the last episode of the 3rd season: I clicked the Play button, the app said that the content is for 16+, I clicked Continue, and then nothing happened. I try to click the Play button again, this time nothing happens at all - either I get an age confirmation dialogue, nor video playback. I'm 29 years old, almost 30, so the age should not be the problem. I tried to restart the app and Mac, clear app cache, check age restriction settings on the Mac, family sharing settings (I'm the admin), download the show, open it offline, without success.

I have two Macs both signed in with my Apple Account, the problem happens on both of them. The Apple TV app on my iPhone and iPad works as expected, it plays back the age restricted shows. Does anyone have any ideas what else can I do to resolve the problem?

Similar issue here in Germany:

TV shows which are rated >= 16 don't play on macOS (15.4.x). Using the TV app on the iPhone works (same account). Episodes from the same show which are rated 12+ play without issues. Screen Time is off (but enabling doesn't make a difference). Birth date in the Apple Account should indicate I'm done with adolescence :-D

This behaviour started end of March, perhaps after the macOS 15.3.2 update? At the beginning of March I was still able to watch something like Slow Horses. MDM is not an issue either – also happens on different Macs for me (both 15.4).

I have the same error. I think problem started with OS update to 15.4. I have since updated to 15.4.1 and error still occurs.

Try to play MA15+ content. Click Play. Pop up asks to confirm 15+. Click yes. Nothing plays. After this clicking play on any MA15+ content no longer produces pop up.

Deleted the Apple TV preference file 'com.apple.TV.plist' in user/library/preferences

After this the pop up will appear again, but still the same issue.

I have contacted Apple Support, they have escalated it. I'm pretty sure the issue is baked into the OS.

Same issue here in Brisbane Australia. wasted an out of my life with Apple support on this and just got cut off in the end. not happy. Back in 2012 I started using Apple kit because it just worked!! if I am going to get this rubbish I might just go back to windows and save money.

After spending two hours with customer service—who had no idea what was wrong with my MacBook—they eventually left me on my own to reinstall macOS and see if the issue persisted. Guess what? Nothing changed.

I’m in the same situation as many of you: after seeing the “Are you over 15?” prompt and answering; I’m now unable to watch any content rated 15+. I even started questioning whether I had clicked the wrong button.

While trying everything I could, I saw the age verification prompt again. I got excited, thinking I was close to solving the issue, and clicked “Yes” calmly and confidently—but still, nothing changed.

Yes, I have an iPhone that plays age-restricted content just fine. Yes, I live in Australia. And yes, my MacBook Air is an M1 running macOS Sequoia 15.5.

At least now that I know I’m not the only one, I feel a bit of relief.

If it plays on iPhone and iPad, then that (matching?) Apple Account’s age setting is not the issue here.

Unless someone else chimes in with a different/new idea, I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).

Contacted Support about this a couple of weeks ago and eventually decided that I would wait until the Sequoia 15.5 update came out and hope that would fix it. Spoiler: It didn't :(

For me on my M1 MacBook Pro, it started after installing the 15.4 update. Shows rated 16+ which I could watch happily on my iPhone or smart TV wouldn't show on my laptop. Everything updated, all cache and app settings reset, signed out and in again, restarted the laptop, checked my account settings, tried on another M1 MacBook Air but still the same issues persist. Clearly amidst the myriad of security patches and fixes, this was one issue not tackled with the latest 15.5 update. Perhaps 15.6 or will we have to wait until the MacOS release in September???

It’s an issue in Australia for all Mature Accompanied (MA 15+) classified shows on macOS Sequoia 15.4.1 and 15.5 when attempting to use the TV app for playback. All age-restricted contented appears to be disabled.

Working alternatives are to use Safari or another browser for playback, or use the TV app on an iPad.

Same issue here. I'm going to request a partial refund of my apple TV subscription. If we all do this, hopefully it will speed up the resolution. I was going crazy thinking that it was a setting on my mac. So much time wasted, but glad I've found this thread.

Same here in Geemany. Just chatted with Support. Answer was "engineers are working on it, no solution date available". Upon asking for compensation for the payed product i was offered 3 free movies for rent, which i took and were shown in my account.

When i sent feedback and contacted Apple directly, I sent them a link to this issue. Surely, when they see the number of responses, this would escalate the issue internally, and I do not believe that Apple doesn't monitor this site. Of course, they would need to in order to manage their online reputation.
