Main monitor suddenly becomes invisible when additional monitor added.

For the last 18 months I have run my Mac Studio with a Samsung 49" main monitor (via HDMI) and a couple of small USB-C linked screens. Everything perfect. Last night I returned to my desk to find the main monitor blank and not appearing in the Display section of System Preferences. Cable was ok. A reboot briefly had the main display look ok only to freeze up with all open windows moving to the small displays and the cursor unable to move into the main space. Disconnecting the smaller displays reactivated the main monitor which then worked perfectly. Reconnecting one of the small displays saw both still working ok but as soon as I reconnected the second smaller display the problem reoccured - only the small displays active and the main display essentially disconnected. This has all happened out of the blue and, while I'm operational, my second small display now can't be used. I'm just worried if this has happened inexplicably what might happen next - any ideas as to the cause?

Grant -

2023 Mac Studio M2 Max running Sequoia 15.3.2

Samsung LC49J890 Ultrawide monitor - connected via Samsung supplied HDMI

small displays : Arzopa models Z1FC and A1 - connected via USB C directly to rear USB C inputs on Mac

As noted in original post all have been working perfectly together in this configuration for more than a year with no changes made by me to any refresh rates or other display settings. Only changes in this period have been regular Mac OS updates.

Update: have just determined that it is only the connection of the Z1FC Arzopa display that causes the Samsung monitor to be rendered "invisible' to the Mac. As the main difference between the Z1FC and the A1 Arzopa displays is that the former is marginally larger (17.1" vs 15.4") and it has a higher native refresh rate (144 vs 60). Changing the refresh rate on the Z1FC made no difference to the issue.

that Samsung LC49J890 appears to be a 3840 by 1080 display, the width of a 4K display, but the bottom is missing -- at 8 bits/color.

it appear to have:

1 HDMI 2.0

one DisplayPort 1.4

one USB-C

to attain a reliable 8 bits/color connection over HDMI at 60 Hz, your cable must be certified and be rated PREMIUM or better (ULTRA is better, and backward compatible).

The cables the display maker threw in the box at the last minute are typically 'lowest bidder' cables, not certified, and do not live up to the required standards.

The difference In performance might be attributable to marginal cables, combined with the power required to run HDMI at full five Volts, where the other interfaces are lower voltages. The resolutions of the other displays should not matter.

Thanks Grant. I have tried it with other HDMI cables with a similar outcome. What perplexes me is what might have changed that leads to this sudden change in behaviour after more than a year of normal operation with the current configuration. The fact that the new ‘disappearance’ of the Samsung only occurs when one specific smaller monitor is connected but not the other, only adds to the mystery, though the power angle you suggest might relate to that. It is the emergence of the issue without any apparent new change to the configuration that is the frustrating factor.
