Deleting voice memos from Icloud deleted them completely

When I signed up for Icloud (200gigs) I told it not to sync my voice memos, because there's too many and I would rather just have them on my phone.

Last week, after an update my Icloud filled up suddenly, and it was asking me to upgrade to 2T for $13 per month. I went through storage options, and saw that my voice memos were on there now.

So I deleted them because I have all of them on my phone. So that I could have space to backup my phone on the 200 gigs I have.

But! When I deleted the voice memos from my icloud, it also deleted them from my phone!

My last backup from a week ago does not have voice memos on it because I had never told it to backup or touch the voice memos!

I'm a pro musician and I just lost hours and days of work and some of my best songs/inspirations that I'll never get back. I couldn't sleep all last night, this made me so angry.

I spent hours troubleshooting, but all the voice memos are gone from recently deleted, and they aren't on Icloud data recovery either.

You guys should fix this.

As you indicated. Your memos were in icloud which means that the memos synced. If you delete, it deletes everywhere. It’s unusual for settings to change but I suspect you may have conflates iCloud sync with your backup settings.

It's absurd that deleting files from the cloud also deletes them from the actual device. That kind of defeats much of the purpose of having a cloud backup

You're conflating iCloud sync with storing your backup in iCloud.

Unser Settings > Apple Account > icloud

If voice memos is enabled, it is syncing using iCloud to all of your devices. This is not a backup per se as anything that you do on device or at iCloud.comm will reflect on all devices. Hence the sync. If off, then voice memos are not synced. Items not synced are stored in your device backup.

Your device backup (if enabled) includes any items not already synced to iCloud. Essentially your device uses iCloud to store a backup.

Look at settings> Apple Account device backup or iCloud backup. If enabled, your device is making a backup and saving it to iCloud. You cannot browse or see what is contained in the backup. It can only be used to restore a device by first resetting it to factory settings.

When I set up Icloud, I specifically deselected Voice memos on sync.

The last update added voice memos to sync without my consent.

I know this because on my last backup before the update, there are no voice memos on the backup.

After the update, my Icloud data was suddenly entirely full and unable to backup.

Why on earth would it delete the voice memos off my actual phone when I delete them from Icloud after telling them not to sync?

Looking at my last backup from before the update, there are no voice memos in the apps section of the icloud backup files. Might it still be in there somewhere and not showing me? Or does that mean they're gone?
