How can I fix activation failures on Apple TV (2nd generation)?

Hi guys,

I’ve got Apple TV (2nd Generation):

Model: MC572B/A  or A1378

it was working with previous router and Wi-Fi. I changed the Wi-Fi and now it doesn’t work at all . Also updated with new connection. Main menu is empty , activation is failed and Bluetooth keep buffering and no connecting to any devices for screen mirroring!! I did almost everything that found on net and YouTube but no success at all:((( restore it, reset it, unplug it and unplug the Wi-Fi,use different device, use Ethernet cable,… I can’t register it on iTunes and iCloud either Through the Tv!

PLEASE Could anyone help me on this issue?

kind regards,

Possibly the new Wi-Fi connection is set up as using WPA3, causing an incompatibility.

For Apple TV (4th generation or earlier), verify that the router or access point isn’t set to use WPA3, as only device models from ~2018 or later support that. Instead use ‘WPA2/WPA3 Transitional’. Some users report that they had to set ‘WPA2’-only first.

Also updated with new connection. Main menu is empty,

An Apple TV (2nd or 3rd generation) without functional internet connection would only show Settings and Computers. All the other apps are loaded from remote servers. Fix connectivity first.

… activation is failed

Activation comes from registering the device with a valid Apple Account during setup.

There is a workaround if it keeps failing despite good internet connectivity.

A failed activation causes issues for both on-device apps and AirPlay. You can’t skip this step.

… use Ethernet cable

That should work when the Wi-Fi connection is difficult or impossible, or when wired is otherwise preferable.

I can’t register it on iTunes and iCloud either

After setting up with good functional internet connectivity, you can sign in for iTunes services, using a proper Apple Account, and a workaround for two-factor authentication. However, this model doesn’t support iCloud services anymore. iCloud has changed, but the system software for this model hasn’t changed with it to accommodate for those changes.

It is a device from 2010 and software from 2014, with much reduced capabilities in 2025 (several [most?] services have abandoned support for these legacy models). It has had its run. Do consider upgrading to newer hardware. The functionality is so much better on modern models.

is it something to do with the TV ? I mean, Do I need to update the Tv software too? Is it possible to be cause of all these problems?

While I would suggest to keep all your devices up-to-date, to get fixes and enhancements, including on your TV, I think that this issue is unrelated to that, as HDMI devices bypass any smart functionality of TVs.
