NEF Files (Nikon Z7) Displaying Black in Preview on macOS Sequoia 15.4 (M4 Pro MacBook Pro)

I'm encountering a strange issue on my new MacBook Pro running macOS Sequoia 15.4. When I try to open NEF (Nikon RAW) image files from my Nikon Z7 camera using the built-in Preview application, the image displays as completely black.

Here's a breakdown of the situation:

  1. The Problem: Double-clicking a .NEF file or opening it with Preview results in a black window, with no image content visible (see attached screenshot example showing a black window for DSC_6751.NEF).
  2. Thumbnails are Fine: Interestingly, the thumbnails for these same NEF files generate correctly and are visible in Finder (as seen in the grid view screenshot).
  3. System Details:
    • Model: MacBook Pro (16-inch, Nov 2024)
    • Chip: Apple M4 Pro
    • Memory: 24 GB
    • macOS: Sequoia 15.4
    • Startup Disk: Macintosh HD
  1. Camera: Nikon Z7
  2. File Type: NEF (Nikon RAW)
  3. Previous Experience: This is a new issue for me. I have used NEF files from this same Nikon Z7 camera on previous macOS versions and different hardware without experiencing this problem in Preview. The files themselves should be perfectly fine.

Troubleshooting/Observations:

  • The issue seems specific to the actual rendering within the Preview application window, as Finder thumbnails are okay.
  • The files themselves are fine in Photoshop! Only preview doesnt work!

Any help, insights, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! This is quite disruptive to my photo browsing workflow.

Thanks in advance!

There's a known bug in Sequoia 15.4 that doesn't render previously supported camera RAW files.
