Why won't my Apple Watch connect to AirPods during workouts?

If I do a fitness plus workout using AirPods, the Apple Watch either will not connect or will lose its connection mid workout. This happens with both Apple TV connection and with an iPad. All devices are up-to-date. This is a recent development. I wonder if there is a bug in one of the updates.
