Unable to watch movies/shows from streaming sites on Macbook Air with M1

I am unable to watch content from any streaming sites (Netflix, Prime, Hulu, etc.) on my MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I can sign in and access the sites, but upon playing the movie or show I merely get a dark screen. I can hear the audio and access the controls (play, pause, etc.), but cannot see any of the video. The MacBook is fully up to date, as is Safari. I have also tried numerous other browsers (Chrome and Edge) with the same results. Youtube, all social media sites, new sites, etc. play both audio and video perfectly fine. This only occurs on streaming sites for movies and TV shows. No other problems with the MacBook. It is a powerful little thing. I can run numerous apps or windows or stock charts with no problem, and that is even while supporting three external monitors. This situation with streaming sites is driving me crazy. Any suggestions?

The M1 MacBook Air does not support three external monitors. It supports a maximum of one external monitor. That means that you are driving at least two of those monitors not via hardware-supported video, but by some software-based "workaround" based on a technology like DisplayLink.

When a commercial streaming site that uses DRM (Digital Restrictions Management – intentional incompatibility) sees that you are using such a workaround, it may intentionally "black out" video. This might happen not just on "extra" monitors attached using the workaround, but also on the built-in screen – the screen where the DRM-infested streaming service would normally be happy to play video.

It also might happen if you merely load the driver software that the "workaround" requires – whether or not you have any extra displays actually attached.

Wow! Thank you! I disconnected the laptop from the monitors, and what do you know? All streaming sites worked perfectly. After tons of research and numerous forums, you are the first to provide anything close to a logical answer. I was so sick of seeing check for updates, check internet, check browser settings, blah, blah, blah. I actually am using DisplayLink to run all the monitors. I had no idea it could be the cause. I use the multiple monitors constantly, so unless you know of a "workaround" for my multiple monitor "workaround," I guess I will just remain satisfied utilizing the iPad to stream movies and shows. It's not the end of the world. The important part is finally having an answer instead of continuing to pull all my hair out, LOL. Again, thanks, I appreciate it much.
