How do I use Find My to recover lost AirPods 2nd generation?

My kid lost his Airpds2. FindMy only shows "Sound Pending" and "Directions" is greyed out. There are no other options like marking it lost or notify when found. Is there anything else we can do to find these? They've been missing for months as it turns out.
