so I basically lost my downloads folder smh it was right there on my dock next to the trash and its gone now but when I drag it from finder back onto the dock and when I click it it opens up the whole folder but previously when clicked it would just show the last like 10 downloads in a line which was way more convenient for me how do I get that one back?

If you ctrl-click on the icon in the Dock, you can choose from Fan, Grid, List, or Automatic.
Fan will provide the short "flyout" list that you want.
I think Fan is only available if you have the Dock at the bottom of the screen.
