iphoto cannot find my duplicate. I can see side by side duplicate photos but iPhoto does not see them when using the "find duplicates" in the utility folder. I've let the CPU run for hours without finding even one out of 1000 photos. Any suggestions?

Are you using iPhoto or Photos for Mac? iPhoto has no built in duplicate detector.
Photos for Mac can detect duplicates (since macOS 13 Ventura), but it takes a lot longer than a few hours.
For moderately sized library with just 70000 photos and videos it took more than a month before the first duplicates have been shown.
Let your Mac run over night when you are not using it and wait.
