Why are iCloud Drive files not visible on Mac Finder but accessible via Safari?

It appeared that I'd lost a number of documents and directories that were previously accessible and visible via Finder on my iMac. After the heartstopping moment, I logged into iCloud via Safari and the files and folders were still there. They are just not visible at all on my Mac. I still have 1.3Tb of free disk space on my iMac. No matter what I do I can't seem to get the same view. Be grateful for any ideas and help. Thanks.

Not sure they are weird does. There are sub-folders and files that exist on iCloud that were visible via Finder on the iMac that now aren’t. If I recreate the sub-folders through Finder I have no idea what it will do to the existing sub-folders on iCloud. I assume it would duplicate or overwrite, which I’m worries about. I’ve changed the OS from Samona to Sequoia - still the same issue.
