I need a new router for home use. My Airport Extreme has finally given up...

Apple suggests the Ubiquiti AmpliFi Alien Router but it's sold out. Is there another good option (hopefully less expensive)? Any opinions about the NETGEAR Nighthawk 8-Stream WiFi 6 Router (RAX70)? It appears to be on sale for a good price.

It will really depend on your goals for a replacement router. In my experience, the Nighthawk is a very good series of routers, that I believe is aimed for folks who need high performance routing for online gaming.

Rudegar has mentioned routers by Synology, and I concur as they are excellent choices. In addition, I would suggest that you consider those by Asus.

The following site is an excellent resource for helping you decide what may work best for you:

For Wi-Fi, you will see standards, like WiFI5, WiFI6, etc. The higher the number, in general, the more capable the Wi-Fi network that the router supports. However, remember, Wi-Fi is a two-way "street." That means, there is no use paying to buy a WiFi6 router, when all of your network clients can only support WiiFi5. Currently, WiFi6 is the new "standard."
