Why is my App Store credit not being used for subscriptions and in-app purchases?

I’m getting a little frustrated because it keeps saying that I have a balance in the App Store but all of my subscriptions and in app purchases are charged to my bank card. Also, my Apple wallet right now has a zero balance. Can anyone help me please?
