Grocery list sorting question

I'm using a shared grocery list with my family in Apple's Reminders app. How come when different family members add items, it does not consolidate under unified categories? For example, if I add "Chicken" it groups it under the category of "Meat". And when my wife adds "Beef" it groups it under a duplicate category of "Meat". How can I get it to just have consolidated categories for all family members?
