MacBook Pro 2018 keyboard backlight not working after screen removal

Recently I removed the broken screen from my MacBook Pro 2018 15'. Currently there is no screen attached and it is used with a external monitor, the touch bar still lights up and is working but the keyboard backlight only shoes after restarting and before logging in. I think this is because of the ambient light sensor not being present on the mac, but the setting to override this and just change the backlight manually is missing from settings (see picture).

Can anyone help?

"MacBook Pro 2018 keyboard backlight not working after screen removal: Thank you for your reply, but what is the key for dull screen? Also the macbook has no mirroring options because there is only the monitor attached. Also it is not a display brightness problem, the monitor has its own controls which is why I think the keyboard is confused. Is there a script to override this?"

Thank you for the screenshot.

Researching this, you can create a launch daemon, but that's an advanced method.

Add Keyboard Brightness to the Status Menu of the Menu Bar:

Adjusting the Brightness:

  1. Go to: Apple menu
  2. Click: Control Center
  3. Scroll Down: to Keyboard Brightness
  4. Toggle On: Show in Menu Bar

THEN...

  1. Click: the Keyboard Brightness
  2. Adjust: the Keyboard Brightness to your preference

Thank you for the screenshot.

Keyboard Not Lighting Up After Screen Removal:

See if this works.

Mirror the Screen to this External Display:

Performing the following will mirror the Home Screen.

  • Without Touchbar: Hold Down [command + F1]
  • With Touchbar: Hold Down: [command + dull screen]

"MacBook Pro 2018 keyboard backlight not working after screen removal: Thanks for your reply, when doing this the slider drops back to zero and the key board brightness never changes. How do I create a launch daemon or is there another solution."

-------

Lauch Daemons:

Mac computers that don't have the keyboard feature of using F4 and F5 keys to mange the brightness can have the assigned as a Login Item (launching at boot). You just need to create it to those keys, and then add it to the folder. Tied it myself. Go here: How can I adjust keyboard backlight on the new M1 MacBook Air? - Ask Different

IMPORTANT:

Back up your Mac prior to making this change to your Mac. In doing so, you with have something to restore store your Mac from from, should anything go wrong with the configuration.
