At first the names of the documents were listed, but when I tried to open the files it showed an icon, with a triangle and exclamation mark, stating that the files were not found. Later, without my doing, the "recent" list disappeared, as well. I've searched high and low using Spotlight and manually and cannot find the "recently opened" files. I've searched the external hard drives, without success.

Unfortunately, the Time Machine hard drive crashed, as well.

Could you explain more what you are seeing. What do you mean by "reported as empty"?

If you mean that when you go to File > Open Recent you no longer see the names of documents, then try searching for the documents using Spotlight and opening them. Once you've opened them again the recents will populated again.
