Mail App continually crashes

When I open Mail App, the email shows up, but the content is often empty. In order to see it, I have to manually quit the App, then reload Mail, which then allows me to see content on just ONE (maybe 2 emails) before it all happens again. Can anyone explain why this is happening and how to fix it?
