Can't verify identity server for gmail

Hi. I open a MacBook Pro 2016 OS 11.7.10, Safari Version 12.1.3 It's my husband's computer who passed away.

I want to be able to use it, mostly for Garage Band. (He left me a small bedroom recording studio).

First question: Can I update this OS for the latest OS 18 … and at the same time, do I update the Safari browser to the latest 18? It has 8 gig of memory.

I started a Gmail address for him, which has been working fine. Until yesterday. I logged on and I get a message that says "Mail can't verify identity of server <stmp.gmail.com> " How do I fix this? Sometimes I want to email files from his computer to mine (MacBookAir 2021 via his gmail address. Please Help :)

There are some of his programs like Logic and ProTools on there, but maybe I can delete them to make room…?

Thanks!

you DON'T need gmail to share files. if you can connect both Macs to the Internet at the same time without re-cabling, you have a highway already. it goes from each computer to your Router. Your Router can also act as an internet Switch, and send data back and forth between computers.

on either Mac (or both) use the Sharing control panel to enable File Sharing, and if you like Screen Sharing as well.

file sharing lets you mount the drive (or a subset of the files) on the other computer, accessible with the Network icon and providing login credentials for the REMOTE computer.

Screen sharing lets you have the other computer's screen appear in a window on the local computer, and you can take over typing and mousing as well.

what happens is that Mail only recognizes ONE error: failure of the server to respond. if that happens while they are making backups, and you use:

Mail > mailbox > take all accounts ON line later, it may reconnect and work.

IF and ONLY if you know the password, you can use WebMail -- a very fancy term for a very simple operation: you surf with a web browser to the site that holds this messages and log in. Then ask t to show your emails.

once that is working, getting Mail working again requires a leap of faith:

IMAP protocol holds all email bodies on the server. When you connect with Mail, it shows you ONLY the headers in a list. When you select one to read, it sends a copy of the entire email to you. The original message is still on the server.

So IF and only IF you have the password, and have already logged using WebMail to be sure its right, and a reasonably modern computer, like MacOS 10.11 or newer, you suffer no harm in deleting the mail account off your Mail and adding it back in.

This process will open a webpage, and bring in other ways of verifications, such as email or text message to another account. Once fully re-verified, you will have access to these emails in Mail again.

<<. Thanks Grant! Now, if you could please tell me how/where I go to update to ONLY Monterey? When I click on Update, it seems to want to just jump to OS 18??? >>

I really suggest you NOT upgrade, because your computer will slow to a crawl and page incessantly. Apple no longer sells MacBook Pro or Air with only 8GB RAM memory because its is simply not enough for later MacOS.

YOU MUST have Trusted Backup to do any upgrades, because one misstep and your computer can only go BACK by Erasing and re-installing.

Hi Grant,

I appreciate your answer, and I do know about file sharing. And Thank you for your 2nd answer re: Updating this 2016 computer.

The 2nd question was about this "Verification" process for gmail. I Amy also want to send emails to other people not in my realm from his GMAIL address: can't verify identity of server <stmp.gmail.com> " How do I fix this?

Thanks, Linda

Thanks Grant! Now, if you could please tell me how/where I go to update to ONLY Monterey? When I click on Update, it seems to want to just jump to OS 18???

And the same for Safari??? should I only go up to a certain Version? or, can that be updated to the latest OS 18?

I DO use the Safari Passwords feature.

Thanks, Linda

PS: I will mail be using this computer to record my Voice overs & using Garage band to edit them. If I dump off some of the other audio files (eg: Logic files, and HIS garage band files)… will that give me more room to update to a higher OS?

Here's a curious question. He has a Mac Mini attached to this MacBook Pro 2016 OS 11.7.10, Safari Version 12.1.3 , It has 8 gig of memory.

Does a Mac Mini share the same Ram with the Laptop? Or, does it act like ADDED Ram? And… circling back to the Safari.. If I keep the OS 11…. can I upgrade the Version 12 of the Safari on this computer? Why would I want to….. for updated Security reasons?

Thanks,

They two are completely independent computers. There is no mechanism for that sort of deep resource-sharing.

But what there is a screen sharing -- especially if the Mini does not have its own physical display. Screen Sharing allow you so connect -- "screen-share' as a verb -- and show the Mini's display (even if the Mini has no physical display) in a Window on another Mac.
