I know there are plenty of additions and upgrades to FCP 11, but is it fundamentally different? I don't need/want to take a deep dive into the advanced editing features...need to learn basics and build from there.
I'm thinking the 10.8 course will be a good start?

I have to strongly disagree here. If one is starting to use a complex application like FCP, just reading the help or even the whole guide is hardly to best way to start.
A good course like we often recommend here is a great way to get the gist of it, and then as the user becomes more familiar then he can get good info from the help menu.
The 10.8 course will give you a good grounding in the application. There are no fundamental differences. The only differences are really added features and capabilities.
What is the course? I can't rate it specifically because there is no link. I recommend the help (user guide) because it was helpful for me when I was a beginner.
Everything from rippletraining is of great quality. You can't go wrong with this.
I find the online user manual a great help. My students use it all the time. It's not as comprehensive as a full video course, but it is absolutely a huge help and a great place to start.

As Luis says, you haven't defined what the course is. I can't provide any concrete feedback on this nebulous "course." Please clarify which link you are trying to learn from.
You've misunderstood the question. I wasn't asking whether or not the specific course is good or not. I know it is. The question was about the fact that the most recent course I have access to is for version 10.8, but there was an upgrade to FCP 11. So I was wondering if there is a radical difference between the two versions, and whether or not I need to take a course that specifically covers FCP 11. As it turns out, I found one, which I show to you in a reply below.

I didn't misunderstand your question. It seems you wanted to make a decision based on knowing the differences in course content, but I thought your question was too vague.
