All you can do is to unplug the charge cable, put it back in and observe if you get the charging symbol - it may take a moment or two if the battery is completely drained.
Sometimes even usb-c cables fail to connect.

In a 16e I would be surprised if it wasn't 100% battery health.
Wired or wireless? If wireless, it may not have been positioned correctly on the charger. The 16e doesn't have mag-safe. If it gets knocked off center, it may not charge.
Hello, I suppose there may be 2 issues: your phone didn’t charge properly or your battery health isn’t good.
Firstly, you may plug or unplug your cable and adapters to see if your phone’s charging well or not. There should be indicators that your phone is charging well and you may check if the battery has risen or not.
Secondly, you may check your phone’s battery health for further information on your battery state.
If further issues persist, please reach out again and inform the Apple care service, we will always be ready to help. Thanks!
Thank you, unfortunately having worked perfectley on Saturday evening I put it on the wireless charge stand as normal. I the morning the phone appeared dead. I then connected it to the cable that came with it, there was no indication of charge and after several hours there was no change. I then connected it to my power pack which has a digital readout out, again there was no indication of charge so either it was fully charged or there is an internal problem.
Charging stand as in a third party accessory? They are typically unreliable, some even drain the phone after charging. Use the cable that came with the phone or a genuine Apple accessory designed for the 16e
Thank you Jason. I took your advice and contacted Apple care service who fixed the problem. I had already tried the up, down and side buttons, he had me try again with the phone connected to charge cable. The forced start worked, he then did a complete remote health check and everything came up OK.
BTW I have seen a lot of aftermarket cases for 16e and SE with built-in magsafe rings. Takes out the guesswork.
