iPhone App Upload file transfer broken through iTunes and AppleDevices

iPhone 8 iOS 16.7.10

iTunes 12.13.6.1

Apple Devices 1.5.2.70 (1.1282.17924.0)

I am trying to upload an iPhone App in a *.ipa file from a trusted source as part of a product development.

Last November '24, I was able to do this for another iPhone using iTunes after connecting with USB and logging in to both PC and phone by drag-and-drop to the iPhone icon.

Now with iTunes, this is broken. iTunes is running on the PC, but no phone icon, and no Files icon in the Library list on the left.

I know the iPhone is connected to PC because I can see its icon and internal storage in a file explorer. No, it ignores any kind of drag-and-drop using File Explorer or any copy and paste by the PC.

I found a method on the Web to use the 'Apple Devices' App. That app is able to recognize the iPhone's presence, but it also has no method of dropping my file into the phone.

In standard, non-jailbroken iPhones, it is generally not possible to install or sideload an .ipa (iOS app archive) file—even from a trusted source—outside of the App Store ecosystem, unless the device is enrolled in special Apple programs or tools.

This restriction is due to Apple’s strict code-signing and app distribution policies, which are enforced to maintain security, privacy, and ecosystem integrity.

Unless a device is jailbroken—which removes Apple's restrictions—installing an .ipa requires one of the following:

  • TestFlight: Apple’s official beta testing platform.
  • Apple Developer Program (with provisioning profiles): Developers can install .ipa files to their own registered devices using Xcode or tools like Apple Configurator.
  • MDM (Mobile Device Management): Some enterprise environments can push apps via MDM with a valid enterprise certificate.

However, outside of these official channels, uploading and installing an .ipa on a non-jailbroken iPhone is not possible. Apple deliberately enforces this to prevent the spread of unvetted or malicious apps.
