That means Apple Music - the subscription service.

As stated, if your iPod looks like the one in the photograph I added to my original post, you cannot add music from Apple Music's subscription service to that type of iPod. In fact, the only model that can use Apple Music is the iPod Touch.

I accept your offer of tips on how to add purchased music to the ipod.

If you intend to use an iPod Classic (and presumably buy music), end the Apple Music subscription. Once you do that, you will be able to add purchased music to your library and add that to the iPod.

If you do in fact have an iPod Touch, let us know which version of iOS it's using (which in turn will tell us which generation it is) and we can offer more advice (although I do not use Apple Music on my iPod Touch).

Let us know.

Have you added music that you have purchased to your iTunes Library? Does it play in your iTunes Library?

Note that if it's an iPod Classic, like the one shown below:

... you cannot add music from the Apple Music subscription service to that type of iPod. But you can add music that you have purchased, either from the iTunes Store, or other online retailers such as Amazon and Bandcamp and you can add music copied form CDs (compact discs).

Post back and we can offer tips on how to add purchased music to the iPod.

Once you have some purchased music in your iTunes Library, if you still need help post back.

By the way, purchased music can be from the iTunes Store (via the iTunes programme), Amazon, Bandcamp or any other online retailer. It can also be music copied (ripped) from CDs (compact discs) if you have any.

There is a slight difference in the method for adding music to your iTunes Library, dependant upon where you buy it:

  • iTunes Store purchases will be added automatically to your iTunes Library when you download them
  • online purchases need to be downloaded (by you) and then you have to manually add them to your library. If you need help, please ask
  • CDs can be ripped by iTunes, directly into your library
