want to continue a project started on iMac but can't find way to update from 10.8.1 on mac book pro - running sonoma 14.7

In the App Store, does it say "Open", or "Download"? If it says "Open" is because you have some other copy of Final Cut Pro on your system.
What do you see on your Purchased page? Did you try downloading from there rather than the FCP page?
Make a zip of your existing version for safekeeping (control-click and choose Compress Final Cut Pro).
Drag the application to the trash but don’t empty it.
Go to the App Store and download Final Cut Pro. It will be the current version.
Are you sure you are running Sonoma 14.7?
What do you see if you go to the Apple menu and choose About this Mac?
Did you try what I suggested - dragging FCP to thr trash and downloading again from the App Store?
The App Store always provides only the current version...
I'm not sure about anything but my 2023 MBP says 14.7.4
yes my fcp is in the trash but not deleted
the App Store not only does not offer me an update, it only has 10.8.
what you say makes sense but it is not the case with my mbp (m2)
I'm hoping apple support contacts me because I'm beginning a long project and don't want to have to learn adobe.....
Thank you Tom, last night it just said open , today it says update - now i have to find a spot with decent wireless as i'm traveling today and don't have my robust wifi - my guess is that since i just upgraded last night it took the apple mothership a few hours to give me a chance to update - so now i guess i just need some patience!

I hope this helps. My library had been updated on the main device but I wanted to work on the M4 Mini at home. I got an error message about the updated library and FCP created. a default untitled library instead. I went to the APP Store and couldn't find an update. The search fro FCP shows me that it is installed with the option Open. I stumbled around here and there then just happened to click the page of FCP shown from the search results with the word Open. On this page, lo and behold, did the button change to the word Update. See if that works for anyone else searching on a solution (March 28, 2025(
