iPod Shuffle (4th Gen) shows up only as disk, not as iPod Shuffle

I bought a second-hand iPod Shuffle and it worked initially, but the second or third time I plugged it into my Mac Studio (Sonoma, 14.4.1), it stopped being recognized by the Finder as an iPod (though it did show up as a disk).

At one point, I tried connecting it to an old MacBook Pro, using iTunes (Mojave 10.14). That worked one time, but when I tried to plug it in there again, it wouldn't be recognized.

I've tried restarting my Mac Studio, erasing the iPod Shuffle using Disk Utility... But I just don't understand why I can see it as a disk, but not as an iPod Shuffle.

(I cannot seem to find a way to reset it to Factory Defaults without it showing up in Finder as expected.)
