Managed webclip in Single App permitted mode shows white screen

We have ADE/DEP enrolled iPads using iOS 18.2.1 into supervised mode using a MDM solution.

We then apply a webclip/webapp to a specific URL

Then we apply a config that only allows to use webapps using com.apple.webapp as bundle ID.

First time the device shows this URL / website from this webapp in full screen as wanted.

Then we send a Turn off device command, which is used out of working hours

In the morning an time controlled power socket turns on AC power to the charger supplying this iPads, which means it turns on again.

Now we experience that it starts up as it should and enables single app permitted mode to this webapp.

But for an unknown reason it also by itself opens a window with white screen and shows this in single apps mode.

This means this solution is useless.

Any experience on this ?

This is a bit difficult. You're likely running up against the wifi not connecting before the web clip tries to load. There isn't really a way around it.

  1. Apple is well versed in always on displays and protecting those displays from damage. This is a very low risk for the customer. If you're using one of the lower end iPad models, or an older higher end model without OLED, the risk is almost non-existent. I've run kiosks for years without burn-in issues.
  2. If the web clip isn't loading properly, I would argue that there is a reason to have it turned on.
  3. You're saving pennies of power per year. The cost or running an iPad at the maximum kWh rate listed in the US would be about $18 for the year. At the average rate, it would be about $7.50.

All that to say, you're engineering yourself a headache for maybe $10/year savings.

We are using the MDM solution 7P from the German vendor Seven Principles.

We have full MDM profile and supervised status

We have created a fullscreen bookmark/webclip

We have made a Kiosk config/single app mode pointing to the bundleID of the webclips

But the OS is creating a new dummy browser whitepage and starts this.

So as a solution we made our own new app as a bookmark app and this now works fine.

The new app wrapper definitely will help. Because it's an app rather than a web clip, the Single App Mode typically applies at load, then the app loads while the device connects to wifi, and then the app loads the site. A web clip loads while the device connects to wifi, resulting in the white screen you were seeing. Nice workaround!
