Magic mouse & keyboard not working on startup after upgrade to Sequoia

Hi all


I updated my imac yesterday (2019 model) to Sequoia, and now when I boot up, I can't log in because it's not recognising my apple bluetooth mouse or keyboard - so I can't even select my name on the startup screen (it shows my name and Guest as options) to be able to enter my password.


The only way I can log in is with a old wired mouse and keyboard. Once I've logged in, my magic mouse & keyboard connect and work as normal.

I've tried turning off bluetooth, unpairing both devices, starting up in safe mode, repairing them - but it hasn't worked.


If anyone has any suggestions for other things I could try I'd be very grateful to hear them! It feels like it's not turning on bluetooth until after you've logged in, but surely not 🤔

Are there the New USB-C Keyboard and Mouse from Apple ?


For a full functionality of both devices would need an Apple Silicon computer


Though, it should not affect the abilities to log into the computer


Have you tried cabling the Keyboard to the computer and making sure the Slider Switch on the Front Top Edge of the KB is Turned ON

Using 2 different Older Apple Bluetooth Keyboards and 2 different Older Apple Bluetooth Mice that date back years


One was used on an iMac 2012 which was retired to the Scrap Heap.


The other used on a M1 Mac Mini which was traded in for the M4 Mac Mini


Each keyboard was Forgotten from the Previously used computers


Subsequently, 1 of the KB was Paired to a M2 Mac Mini running Sequoia 15.0 through to Sequoia 15.2 - No issue


The second Keyboard from circa 2012 is currently used on the M4 Mac Mini - - No issue


No issues meaning from the Off Position of the computer


Turn ON Both the KB and Mouse


Turn On either or both machines mentioned in above


Presto and viola - No Issues


Shall leave you with this.


Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference

Thank you guys I'm back up and running - if with the little workaround of needing to (for start-up at least) have my keyboard wired, but I can live with that. Final solution:

  1. Change login screen option from 'List of users' to 'Name & password': this means my first interaction with the machine is through the keyboard rather than the mouse
  2. Connect keyboard with USB cable for start-up so it accepts input

Once I'm in - everything's fine and I can disconnect the cable from my keyboard.

Thanks for replying! No there's nothing new in this setup - it's the same keyboard and mouse that came with my iMac when I bought it some years ago - the only thing that's changed is the OS upgrade. And yes - the little slider switches are definitely on ;) Once I've logged in (using wired KB & mouse) - then both my apple keyboard and mouse connect. Cabling the keyboard might work - but the hurdle even before that is that it's not picking up the mouse so I can't even click on my name for the password entry prompt to come up on screen.

For the keyboard, initially connect the Magic Keyboard to the computer using a Lightning cable. Once logged in, remove the Lightning cable and the keyboard should automatically connect via Bluetooth.


For the mouse, turn off the Magic Mouse and turn it back on. Try pressing the mouse button several times to get it to connect over Bluetooth. If not, use the wired mouse and use settings to forget the Magic Mouse (if necessary) and then connect it over Bluetooth.

P.S. I believe the keyboard only remembers once Bluetooth setting at a time. The mouse may remember a few Bluetooth settings.

Thank you - I'll give that a try. I've changed my login screen to 'Name & password' (it was set to 'List of users') as that will (hopefully) bypass the problem of not being able select my name with the mouse before even getting to the option to enter my password.

Rebooting now... I'll report back 🤞
