documents folder location change

Hi,

What is the best way to have my documents files on an external drive (because of a too short memory internal drive)?

I could create a "my documents" folder on the external drive and then create an alias of this folder in the internal drive home file.

But, what about the original "documents" folder on the internal drive? Is it possible to delete it and will there be no problem with some app creating files?

And is there an other way to have the original documents folder on an external drive?
