FCP automatically selects top clip. Can this be turned off?

I'm teaching a sound design class using FCP 11. Whenever I'm working with an audio file that's connected to a video clip, FCP has an irritating habit of constantly deselecting the audio file and instead showing the video clip properties in the inspector window. I have to keep re-selecting the audio clip all the time. I want my audio file to STAY in the inspector window no matter what.

Is there a way to disable this auto-select feature? Please help! It's driving me crazy!

PS: the problem happens when I click in the timeline window to reposition my playhead to listen to the adjustments I've made. If I use JKL or the arrow keys to navigate, it doesn't revert to the video clip--only when I click in the timeline window, which I do all the time. Even when the audio clip is selected, clicking in the empty space above the clips in the timeline deselects everything. This is what I want to change if possible.
