I get a message that I need a newer version of iTunes, but the version I have is the most recent one compatible with my white laptop. This one runs MacOS X 10.6.8
Earlier Mac models
The iTunes/Music database changed format a couple of software versions ago. When you upgraded at some point it updated the database and it is no longer compatible with older versions of iTunes. I had the same problem which is explained by turingtest2 in this post. I never did the transfer- the older Mac is one I keep as an emergency backup so I don't really care if my Music library is up to date.

Unfortunately iTunes Store won't even open in Mavericks, I have to use my 10.13 VM to buy music, though I can still play it using iTunes 10 in Mavericks (where I could upgrade to iTunes 11 or even 12). In 10.6 you should still be able to play music.
