Apple Remote Desktop not recognizing Mac for full functionality

I recently purchased ARD and everything on LAN is good. I switched to external remote access, addressing the port forwarding on my router and connected with screen sharing. The issue that I have is that my external connection does not recognize the Mac computer, ARD version or OS version. Im connected, but it doesn't know it is a Mac therefore most functions like restart, high resolution viewing, shutdown are all not accessible. Any thoughts on how to get my Mac recognized for full functionality?

I believe the answer is that you likely only forwarded port 5900 for the VNC connection. I believe you need to also forward port 3283 and 5901 to allow all of the other information to flow. Note, exposing services to the public is always a risk. While Apple's ARD is more advanced than VNC, it operates on the same port. Port scanners can search for 5900 and then attempt to connect. VNC allows connection with just a password. ARD requires user name and password unless legacy access is enabled.
