Photos debacle after 18.1.1 update

My iPhone 15 Pro was updated with 18.1.1 the other day. Now my photos are a DISASTER! Navigating photos is no longer intuitive. I can’t find the photos I want, etc. Sounds like plenty of people have the same problem. What can be done?

iPhone 15 Pro, iOS 18

That's not how photos has always worked. Prior to this the Recents folder contained only photos taken with the iPhone camera and none of the pics synched with mac appeared there. There's no way to separate them any more.

Agreed. I also keep about 30k photos on my phone. An easy search like black or white, or sky used to get me in the ball park. Now I get a half a dozen screen shots with the word black and a few shots of skies but all my under water shots appear under that search. Nothing feels relevant for a photographer anymore.

PLEASE APPLE, stop fixing it if it ain’t broke?

This new update has messed up everything.

No more unnecessary changes.

Stop changing apps that already work well.

The EMAIL update is worse or equal to

the PHOTOS update & something changed

in CALENDARS that has messed me up 3 times for appointments I’ve had and missed.

PLEASE FIX these and go back to the OLD VERSIONS!

Nope. Recents used to show only photos taken with the iPhone camera that had not been deleted from the phone. That functionality is nowhere to be found. So no, Recents does not remain and whilst all the pics might be "there" the ability to separate pics taken with the phone and not deleted from the phone from pics transferred to Mac, deleted from the "camera roll" and synched back to the phone from Mac is definitely not still there.

I understand that Photos has changed and that there's probably no way to go back, but you need to stop telling people that key functionality that they used to use - i.e. Recents - is still there. It isn't

I am a filmmaker, since 2007 iPhone user, and I have something like 78k ‘items’ in the photos app. Navigating this new photos app and it’s god awful design is an unmitigated disaster. It would take me less time to return to Italy and reshoot than to find an image I shot there in 2014. Please do something good with this

I do so agree with you.... it is an absolute disaster.

And the search for rightly made pictures, heavily interferes with the efficiency in my work.

Previously I could blindly have trust in the photo's app and now it is getting a real hindrance and efficiency breaker. And it does not become better, each time again I bump in to strange behaviour of the app.

I looks almost like an Android machine. (Hopefully this triggers the techies in Apple to take the lead again.)

Play with it a bit. Especially, look at the customization options. The interface looks like they threw everything on the screen at once (which they nearly did!) but they gave us "Customize & Reorder" at the bottom so that we could cut out the things we didn't want to see. And they gave us Pinned so we could have one place to put the things we do want to see. Once you get command of the options, it's pretty cool.

Nope. You can only review photos by date in Recent Days if you took 4 or more photos on those days. If you took less than 4 photos on a day then, for some unfathomable reason, that day doesn't appear in the Recent Days collection.

You can view them by date in Library.

Recents shows items in date added order. In the previous version of photos it would include everything in your library in date added order. You can effect the same sort by dragging your library down until you get the icon to sort (up and down arrows) to sort by recently added or date captured.

I can’t believe the mess that has occurred from the recent update. I’m an amateur photographer and Apple decided to make finding your photos and albums as complicated as possible. It was fine before, these new categories are useless and create a high level of stress and anger when trying to navigate. What was especially convenient before the update was when duplicating a photo that I wanted to edit, the copy would pop up as the most recent photo in the main album. This was so convenient and a major time saver. Now, however,

the duplicate stays beside the original, so I have to scroll back thru hundreds of pics over and over and over again. Please fix this!

My guy You apparently did not understand that sequence of original photo is imperative as 2BJuis… noted. Floating edits disconnected from originals and labeling them is a primary use for design, engineers, and business related uses.

Many of the new categories serve no purpose if they match none of your photos. And the prior year, month, date without recent was more universal.

Yes, I would truly hate it if they undo the vastly improved photos app, and I have provided feedback THANKING them for replacing the old, brain-damaged Photos app. Speaking of undoing technological advances, we could also go back to using IBM PCs with MS-DOS.
