Compatibility of MacBook Pro M4 with monitor Asus ProArt pa27ucx-k

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to replace my old iMac 27” (2019) with the new MacBook Pro M4-Pro, paired with a larger external monitor. I’m currently considering the Asus ProArt PA27UCX-K, which seems highly recommended for photo editing based on various reviews (I’ve ruled out the Apple Pro Display XDR as it doesn’t feel worth the expense for my needs).

However, I’ve come across some vague information about its compatibility with the MacBook Pro M4-Pro. Does anyone here have experience or thoughts on this combination?

Thanks a lot for your help!

The ASUS ProArt Display PA27UCX-K is a 27" display with a resolution of 3120x2160 pixels, a refresh rate of 60 Hz, and support for 10-bit-per-channel color.

It has several inputs:

  • USB-C (DisplayPort Alt Mode)
  • DisplayPort (version 1.2)
  • HDMI (version 2.0) (two of these)

So there are several ways that you could connect it to a M4 MacBook Pro – including

  • With a USB-C to USB-C cable (that is rated as being able to carry 4K video)
  • With a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter cable
  • With a HDMI to HDMI cable
  • Through a DisplayPort or HDMI port on a hub or dock
  • Through a downstream Thunderbolt port (hub port or daisy-chaining port) on a Thunderbolt hub or dock that supports the attachment of regular USB-C displays or USB-C display adapters

If I remember correctly, HDMI v2.0 has bandwidth that prevent you from having all of

  • UHD 4K resolution
  • A 60 Hz refresh rate
  • 10-bit-per-channel color
  • RGB 4:4:4 representation

at the same time. So you could have (60 Hz, 8-bit-per-channel color) or (30 Hz, 10-bit-per-channel color). The use of 8-bit-per-channel color might not be of concern to you, but if it is, I would suggest going with a USB-C or DisplayPort connection to the display.
