Touch ID in notes repeatedly stops working on Mac

I use Touch ID with an M1 MBP to unlock encrypted notes.

Sometimes that works. And then, out of the blue, Touch ID loses function.

When I enter the password to access my note, then as a second effect usually Touch ID starts working again for a while … until it again stops working.

What I expect:

When I select a locked note, usually the Touch ID dialog comes up automatically.

I gently put the finger on the button (no pressing).

Then the note unlocks.

What (sometimes) happens:

When Touch ID loses function, either nothing happens or the Touch Bar says that I should put my finger on it to switch to another user. But if I do, nothing happens.

What I tried:

I have restarted the Notes app. That doesn't help.

I have re-entered the password. That helps temporarily.

I have rebooted the Mac. That also helps temporarily.

The problem has existed for the past few version of macOS. But the problem has become more frequent, almost daily, under macOS Sequoia 15.

I don't think I ever had this problem under iOS or iPadOS and Face / Touch ID on these devices.

Any ideas how to fix this permanently?
